The Review of Arts, Literature, Philosophy and the Humanities

Volume XIX, Number 2 --- Mid-Spring 2000

When we first put up this review, we sent a copy
to the publisher. They responded with a tart letter,
informing us that: One of the images you selected
is not one that you have the right to use.
Please remove the image of a cockroach
crawling into someone's ear.
We've done so.

"The strangeness is this: two should-be enemies
are working together to solve your common-garden variety rape-and-strangulation-murders
at a time when not-so-routine state-sponsored rape, looting, and murders
are abroad in the land."

Notes of a Desolate Man
"It's like a three week journey on the
Trans-Siberian railway. How does one communicate
such desolation without frying the mind of the reader or, in the case of one reader,
without making him eager to lay it down and be done with it."

The New World Order
"The New World Order is trying to force us to surrender our rights,
property, and guns to an internationalist government,
donate a portion of our GNP to poor nations,
surrender our armies, and be nice to homosexuals."

Losing Sight Gaining Insight.
"He may be writing a sad story about his own personal misfortune,
but, all the same, his arrogance shows through.
We can only hope that as he ages, this arrogance
might melt some under the truth of his (and everyone else's)
human condition."

Grand Central Winter,
The Marines of WWII, and
Getting Drunk in Bar Stories

Death and Suicide in Anorexia Nervosa
"They are in no way depressed or sorry for themselves
and do nothing to avert their impending death; but they also take no deliberate steps
to hasten their end and show no signs of
waiting or hoping for death."

Plants with Nervous Breakdowns
"He waters these plants with blood or forcefeeds with meat,
some of which bark like dogs at midnight,
while others sing melodiously in the wind
and still others have nervous breakdowns, like sensitive souls,
when the weather is about to change."

The Ideology of the Horizons
"What is strange in the desert is
speaking, thinking in words, dialogizing, communicating...
the human actor is but an insignificant footnote to the space;
to think of presence in dogmatic terms of space --- where space
as a habitat is at best a seasonal interruption ---
is to practically annul oneself."

A Red, Red Rose
"As fair art thou, my bonie lass, / So deep in love am I;
And I will love thee still, my dear, / Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear, / And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear, / While the sands o'life shall run."

Words from the Mouth Cave
The books are full of black curves, / dots like the eggs the boll-weevil laid
each monsoon in the furniture-cracks / in Ludhiana. Far up in front
the teacher makes word-sounds / Neeraj does not know. They float
from her mouth-cave, he says, / in discs, each a different color.

The phrase "suffering is good for you" doesn't belong ---
either in his brain, nor in his heart, nor in Tricycle.
I suspect that it comes to us not from Buddhism, nor Hindusim ---
but from out the gory world of Christianity or traditional Judaism.
