Dear Ford Foundation:

Thank God you finally came though with my grant request. Although I seem to recall I sent off the original application to you in 1967 or thereabouts. But, as they say, better late than never.

I remember that my request had to do with saving the world, about explaining that love was more important than bombs or missiles, that we all needed to talk to each other. Needless to say, it was the 1960s.

Now, after all these years, I am not so sure that love --- or any of its many manifestations --- is the answer to anything. At least, to the problems that always seem to be noodling humanity: war, disease, corporate greed, bad plumbing, etc.

Still I am pleased that you have belatedly elected me to be of service to humanity, to be singled out for my somewhat dreamy vision of world peace from so many years ago. This eternity of waiting may have taken its toll --- I know I am more creaky, certainly more cantankerous --- but I want you to know that I still care, still want to be sure that our children and our children's children survive to live in a better world.

Even though my dreams of yore to others seemed little dotty to others, you have restored my faith in these hopes. There was heart there; still is, possibly. You've given me the chance, at last, in my last years, to do my final bit for humanity.

I thank you again from the depths of my heart.

--- L. Lark
