If we can speak of a spirituality of divorce --- and we had better begin to try --- it must start with this sense of radical displacement. I talk to many women, and a few men, who feel the pain of a broken marriage as a kind of dissolution of personality. They think they will never be happy again.
They will never be happy in the way they were, but this is the important point: they will not be the person they were. Divorce is a radical makeover.
