Subject: Why Do You Have A Picture of My Grandmother...

... illustrating a memoir called When All the World was Young on your website? The page is leeching my bandwidth, but that's not the point. The point is the young woman in the picture is Viola May Chandler and not Barbara Holland or anyone she knew. I'd appreciate it if the picture was removed.

Our Editor replies:

We have removed the picture and we apologize.

We used it because it was very evocative of the times and worked well to illustrate a superb book.

We only draw pictures from sites that list themselves as .org because most of them are educational and have no problem sharing their resources with other non-profit organizations.

We too have photos online that we are happy to share with others. A good example is one we have labeled the "Crying Frenchman" --- see above --- which engenders enormous numbers of daily hits.

The picture was taken in 1940 as the Germans were invading Paris. It costs us a bit in downloads but it says so much about a sad time in a sad period of world history. We are willing, thus, to offer it up to those who wish to view it.

Subject: Hiroyuki Itsuki "Tariki" Review

It's a very useful review, but there is a typo at the top of the page in the spelling of the author's first name. It says Hirouki when it should be Hiroyuki.

Otherwise, thanks for making this review available. I'm reading the book now, largely on the basis of this review.

RALPH:

I just read about Fritz Wolff's book on Mining Engineering. He was one of my deceased husband, Woody Latvala's students.

I would love to send him an e-mail, but I have been unable to find his e-mail address. I am 81 and it would be such a joy to tell him how proud of him I am.
