Subject: I LOVE RALPH!

Hi Lolita,

This is Nasdijj. I LOVE and ADORE your magazine.

It is a very definite and badly needed VOICE in the wilderness.

I am simply a HUGE fan of what you do.

Write to me anytime. Even if I am on the road, I'll write back.

I am writing a book called I WILL SAIL AWAY --- it's about ART and the boys in an AIDS support group I run. I put a lot of it on my blog.

--- Be well! All best!

Dear Nasdijj:

O my! Not only am I in love with your writing, now I am in love with you.

Your letter came just when I was finishing your latest, Geronimo's Bones.

You know I had to lay it down a few times because it hurt too much.

Please don't write any more sad ones, sad like that.

And please keep in touch.

Subject: Dyer epitaph

Dear Lolita,

Many thanks for your email and the link. You have done me proud. I didn't think I was ready to go into print, but it looks fine.

I have now been to Cambridge University Library to consult Bedfordshire notes and queries and have found that v. 2 of the epitaph was reproduced in Vol. 1 (1886), and the inscription on the front of the tomb and the will of Catherine Lady Dyer (this is the correct form) were reprinted in Vol. 3 (1893).

The item about the epitaph speaks of "a long piece of poetry, so quaint that I think it would be a pity not to reproduce it," and the writer then goes on to give only what we now know is v. 2. I wonder if this truncation is the cause of recent halvings.

I have a bit more work to do on this. I shall write again.

By the way, there is one mistake in your piece: I am not a reader of RALPH ... perhaps I should be. Could you send me a copy of the issue with the Dyer item in it, and I'll send you something in recompense either of your choice or mine?

--- Regards,
Victor Perry
